July 2006 - Why would Farmer Ben plant these pumpkins in this ugly brown stuff? Well, the 'ugly brown stuff' is that ground cover (Rye) whose great root system holds the soil in place. It also acts as a wind-break for these young pumpkin plants (they hate to be blown around in the wind).
